Special Info |
A time to be born: Patricia D. Thomas was born on March 5, 1951 in Brooklyn, NY
to Calvin Robert Freeman and Mildred Ronetta Freeman. As a child, Patricia was
fascinated with art. She was also a lover of music. She loved to freestyle with
watercolors, and draw. If you let her tell it-art was a release for her, made her feel free
and understood.
A time to learn: Patricia attended public school in Brooklyn and graduated from
Franklin K. Lane High School in ‘69. During her senior year she received a scholarship
to study business and administrative bookkeeping at Spelman College-she refused the
offer. “The world isn’t just black, if I had went to an only black school how would I
know how to work with other folk” With this, Patricia showed that she didn’t just
want to be put into anyone’s box. She wanted to have a seat at the table based on her
abilities-not just her race/ethnicity.
Patricia took certification courses at York College and and began to work as a temp
administrative assistant for the private sector. In October 1984, she transitioned to
become a paraprofessional/teaching assistant until her early retirement in April
1997.While in the D.O.E. she led an art therapy course for her students where they
sculpted, painted and glazed ceramics.
A time to serve: Patricia was a woman of faith! She was a member of Holy Trinity
Baptist Church as a child and sang on their choir. As an adult, she was a member of Pit
to Glory Outreach Ministries. Patricia loved GOD.
A time to love: While at a fundraising dance, Patricia met a senior from Wingate
high school named Owen A. Thomas. Owen and Patricia fell in love and got married at
Holy Trinity Baptist Church on May 23, 1971. From this union came two children
Robin Monay and Owin Bernard Thomas and one grand daughter Adia Kelise.
Patricia and Owen were together until his passing in March, 1984. In the fall of 1989
Patricia was introduced to Leon Joseph by a mutual friend. Together they enjoyed
going on trips to Atlantic City and dancing. Patricia and Leon married at an intimate
ceremony in Queens, NY on June 26,1993. From this union came one son, Kyle
Freeman Joseph. Patricia was a family dinner-I left some food on the stove for youkinda
person. You didn’t have to be her blood for her to be a mother to you.
A time to mourn: On September 27, 2023 After battling with Crohn’s disease for
nearly 53 years-Patricia died. She leaves to mourn, one sister Cynthia Freeman-
Borden. Three children, Robin Monay Thomas, Owin Bernard Thomas, Kyle Freeman
Joseph. One granddaughter, Adia Kelise Jennings. A host of in laws, cousins, nieces,
nephews, spiritual sons and daughters, relatives and loved ones. |
