Obituary
“People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it’s always trying to please us back.” ― Alice Walker, The Color Purple
Yvonne F Cosby, the eldest child of Ada Bernice Mills and John Henry Rollins, was born on August 4, 1941, in Anson County, North Carolina.
As a youth Yvonne was good at so many things and as a result was always in the top of her class. As the eldest of five siblings John Jr, Adrian, Paulette, and Martin, Yvonne was naturally nurturing, loving, and protective. She enjoyed growing up in Peachland County, with her grandmother and Grandfather Sarah and Lester Mills. On Grandpa Mills’ vast farm, filled with rows and rows of cornfields, as far as the eye can see, she didn’t like picking cotton for him, but she did love the pecan trees, the two cows they had, pulling emeralds from Black Creek, and drinking the most delicious well water.
Yvonne attended high school in Brooklyn, New York, where she met Emmett Claude Cosby Jr. After a union in Holy Matrimony, they welcomed a beautiful daughter, Florence Marie Cosby, who would be her only child. Yvonne, already a seamstress, explored her talents while working as an Administrator at the Bazooka Bubble Gum factory in Brooklyn and attending New York City Community College. She thrived in Psychiatry and Nursing and was hired by the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. She quickly climbed the ranks and transferred over to work as the unit coordinator at the psychiatric ward at Queens General Hospital until her retirement.
The skills Yvonne acquired during her youth resulted in making many friends. She sewed elaborate clothing, including stylish coats for friends. She shocked the men in the lumber yard by purchasing bundles of wood to build shelving and tables, and astounded the captains of the fish yard by catching huge fish that took two to three people to reel in. She expressed her creativity through cooking and went to cooking school after retirement. She eventually used her elegant gourmet skills to start a catering service with her daughter. She enjoyed traveling to Foxwoods, where she frequently won at high-stakes bingo.
Yvonne Cosby was loved by everyone she met; she was the most loyal, refreshingly honest, human being. She did not follow the rules, she made them up as she went along. She was extremely funny and told the most amazing stories. She is survived by her daughter, her granddaughter Nadhimet “Nazzy” Cosby, and great granddaughter Mia Cosby, as well as a host of family and siblings. She departed this life at sunset- on September 18th, 2023, in Rockaway Park, New York.
