Cecilia Thomas, affectionately known as Miss Cecil and Mother James, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at her home in Brooklyn, New York at the grand age of 101.
Cecilia was born on November 2, 1920 in Boca, St. George’s, Grenada to the parents of Elfreda Douglas and Rennie Roberts. She attended the Beaulieu R. C. School in Grenada where she received her primary education. After leaving school, she went on to farming and rearing animals, and sold her produce at the marketplace. She migrated to the United States on September 3, 1979 and worked as a Home Health Aide for several years. Cecilia was a faithful member of Crown Heights Gospel Church in Brooklyn, NY and attended Sunday School and participated in the Women’s ministry for over forty years. In her spare time, Cecilia enjoyed making beautiful clothe mats, sowing and socializing with friends.
Cecilia Thomas will be remembered most for her love of God and kindness to family and friends. She loved to spend time with her family, laugh, and make others laugh. She showed compassion to all and was quick to help family, friends and loved ones. Cecilia raised many children and opened up her home and heart to those who were in need. Many individuals confided in Mother James and looked to her for wisdom and advice.
Cecilia was married to Kishlow James (Deceased) and later married Griffith Thomas (Deceased). Cecilia is survived by seven children Edna Roberts, Winston James, Godfrey James, Gerald James, Sylvia James-Mitchell, Gemma James, and Janey-Ann Thomas. She was preceded in death by two children Eslyn Clarke and Bishop Edwin James. She is also lovingly remembered by her 22 grandchildren, Raphael, David, Allison and Brian Duncan, Sheldon Reid, Heather Clarke-Cuffy, Khenan Clarke, Isaac and David James, Michael and Collin Campbell, Merilyn Cudjoe, Marlone, Eneasha and Rondell James, MacKedda James, Wendell James, Jennifer James-Dennis, Rachel James-Scott, Tina Bubb, Dr. Tana Connell and Tenisha Sealey. Cecilia leaves behind a large extended family and will be missed by 30 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives, and friends across the United |
