Special Info  Lena Melbrozine Buchanan was a woman of God, wife, and exemplary mother. She began her life as a child in Highgate, Saint Mary, in Jamaica West Indies. She was raised by her loving father, Nathaniel Biggs, and later in life, went to live with her mother Gwendolyn McLean, brother Edwin and sister Vida. As a child, Lena wanted to join the Royal Air Force, and also dreamt of becoming a traveling Evangelist. Lena loved caring for others. She met her love, and life-long partner of 56 years- husband, Nunes George Buchanan, while attending Highgate All Age School. Years later, the two would create a non-profit, 501c 3 to benefit their alma mater- the Highgate All Age School Alumni Association. Together, Lena, George and several other Highgate Alumni, would gather donations of school supplies, book bags, computers, and books to be shipped and donated to the school, along with a special scholarship. Lena and George and were blessed with four boys; Allen, Errol, Barrington, and Desmond. Unfortunately, Allen died as an infant, and is now with Lena, in Glory. Lena and George desired to create a better life for their boys, and decided to seek that life out in London, England. They reluctantly left Jamaica, leaving their 3 children with Lena's mother, Gwendolyn McLean. While in England, Lena Buchanan worked in a factory making light bulbs, and George fixed cars. What little money they had, they shared, and every month, they sent money home to take care of their three boys in Jamaica, through her mother. While in England, they were again blessed with three little girls; Angela, Geraldine and Delali. Realizing that they could not make the life they so desperately sought, for their now six children, in England, they decided to move to the United States in 1968. Lena happily raised her children as a devoted mother, faithful wife and avid gardener, she loved flowers! When the children were older, she began working at PS 52 as an Children's Aide. Feeling the need to fulfill her childhood dream of caring for people, she studied, trained, and recieved her accreditation to become an Liscened Practical Nurse. Lena, or Queen Bee, as she was lovingly called, was the the consumate Hostess. It was a well-known fact that on almost every holiday, family and friends would converge at the the Buchanan house for a joyous time during the holidays. She recently remembered those days fondly, with childhood friends and family such as Leslie, Audrey, Cita , Marcia, Junie, Hope, Nen-nen, Danny and Beryl, Yvonne, Marlene and Kenrick, Claudette, Lois, Natalie, Francine, Lynn, Gil and April, to name a few. There was always a good time and a warm reception, at the Buchanan house. Lena was the 'Queen Bee' hosting and serving with a smile, letting the light of love shine through her! In 1977 Lena and George moved from Jamaica Queens to Laurelton. Lena soon found a life-long friend in Sister Lois Smith, and was invited to the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield Gardens, where she found her home in Christ. She served as a Deacon for many years, never forgot her faith, and loved her church family dearly. Lena Buchanan is survived by her six children Angela, Geraldine, Desmond, Errol, Barrington and Delali, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, countless nieces and nephews and several adopted children. She was blessed a few weeks ago to celebrate and fellowship, for her 89th birthday. In conclusion, on any given morning, you could hear Lena, still in bed, singing her favorite gospel song..."Your grace and mercy brought me through, I'm living this moment because of You. I want to praise You, and thank You too, Your grace and Mercy brought me through!" Hallelujah!
